The best “bad movie” of the year!
Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) fights to end the eternal war between the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her.
Is there anything critically good about this film, probably not and I would be lying to myself if I tried to convince you otherwise. However, the movie knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to be anything better. What you do get is 91 minutes of action packed, ridiculous fun - in similar vain to Die Hard or Tomb Raider.
Kate Beckinsale is excellent, she was clearly born to play this role and hasn’t aged since the first film is 2003. My only complaint is that she is out of action for part of the film. Theo James is a little more two-dimensional, but due to his character’s removed nature he gets away with it. Tobias Menzies is appropriately menacing without being too over-the-top and Lara Pulver is superb. The other stand-out is Sir Charles Dance, who is the last person I expect to see in this, but he was amazing.
The CGI is reminiscent of the “Teen Wolf” series and the use of more practical effects would've helped, but they can often be time consuming and painful for actors. The script is a little rushed in the first 35 minutes, but once the pace steadies out its a clever script, which will certainly excite fans of the series.
Overall its not a critically pleasing film, but it’s a whole lot of fun!
